MARRIAGE REQUIREMENTS IN NEW JERSEY
Getting married is such an exciting process, so long as you don’t stress over it. There is so much to consider. . . the wedding invitations, the venue, the linens, the DJ and everything in between. But let’s not forget, there are a few extra to-dos so that you meet all marriage requirements in New Jersey.
So, before you walk down the aisle, here’s what you need to know about getting a New Jersey marriage license.
How do I apply for a marriage license in New Jersey?
According to the New Jersey State Department of Health, you can download or pick up a marriage application at the Local Registrar’s office. Fill it out, but it is very important not to sign the application. All applications must be signed “under oath in the presence of the issuing authority.”
You will also need the following:
- Valid ID (driver’s license, passport, or state/federal ID)
- If you’re a New Jersey resident, one applicant will also need to provide proof of residency
- A social security number
- A witness who is 18 years or older
- $28 application fee
How long does it take to get a marriage license in New Jersey?
There is a 72-hour waiting period after you’ve applied with the Local Registrar. The waiting period officially begins as soon as the application is filed.
This means your wedding ceremony must take place at least 72 hours after the application has been filed. To complete it, a judge, minister of religion, or any approved officiant must complete and return your marriage license application. Keep in mind, a marriage license application is only valid for six months.
